A woman reported she had received a call from someone claiming to be a Redmond Police Officer advising her Social Security Number had been frozen and she needed to pay thousands of dollars in fines. The scam was additionally convincing as the number the suspect called from was the same as the Redmond Police Department non-emergency line. The suspect told the victim to purchase Apple gift cards and then provide the activation codes over the phone. After complying, the victim realized it was a scam and reported it to police. Government agencies will never ask for fines to be paid immediately over the phone and don't ask for payment through gift cards. Crooks can spoof official numbers easily, please hang up and contact the actual agency if you receive a suspicious call like this.
