Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Community AssessmenT

The City of Redmond is committed to creating a Redmond in which all residents can fully and effectively access city services, influence city policy and direction, and feel a sense of belonging and safety. For this reason, the City is conducting a community assessment to learn how to most equitably serve and create opportunities for those who live, work, and play in Redmond.

This assessment will result in a roadmap and a three-year strategic plan to create more equitable and inclusive policies, programs, and overall culture.

Vision, Mission, Objective, and Concepts

Vision

The City of Redmond is committed to being a leader in promoting the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our community.

Mission

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion community-based Initiative is focused on ensuring all residents can fully and effectively access City services, influence city policy and direction, and feel a sense of belonging and safety.

Objective

Establish and support strategic practices that increase our City’s ability to provide excellent services; encourages cross-cultural interactions; and strengthens our relationships with our diverse communities.

Concepts

The words we use are important, the meaning we assign to them can be powerful and impactful.

  • Diversity - Refers to perspectives, voices, people, lived experiences, means, abilities, and more, with particular attention to those that have been historically excluded and marginalized from decision-making, power, and control within societal institutions.
  • Equity - Refers to the fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all people while striving to identify and eliminate barriers that have prevented and continue to prevent the full participation of communities historically oppressed, excluded, and marginalized. Equity involves increasing justice and fairness with the decisions, policies, programs, and processes of institutions or systems and a fair, intentional distribution of resources so that communities receive what is needed, when, and how it is needed.
  • Inclusion - Refers to the act of centering and elevating diverse perspectives, acknowledging whose voices are present, included, and welcomed at the decision-making table and who is missing. How the missing voices and perspective are outreached to, invited, and represented at the decision-making table to make sure they also influence societal institutions.
