Community Gardens

Background

Community gardens started at Juel Park in 2010 as a community and staff-led effort. The project started with 20 garden plots and has since then increased to 50 plots. Community gardens were identified as a community need in the 2017 PARCC (Parks, Arts, Recreation, Culture, and Conservation) Plan and further supported during outreach for the PARCC Plan update in 2022. During the 2022 budget process, the expansion of community gardens was recognized by the Redmond community as a high-priority need.

Expansion

In response to the PARCC Plan and budgeting process, the existing community gardens at Juel Park were expanded in 2023 to include 20 additional gardening plots accessed by a gravel path. 5 of the new plots are raised in height to be more accessible, and the park now contains plots varying in size, up to 10' x 20'. Additional community garden expansion is planned for 2024; however, a location has not yet been identified. In addition, the new Redmond Senior & Community Center will also feature gardening plots.

Current Community Gardens

Community gardens offer a range of benefits, including the promotion of physical activity, access to fresh produce, social connections, and as an educational resource for sustainable living practices and environmental sustainability. Currently, the City of Redmond offers garden plots at Juel Park, which are undergoing expansion in 2023 and in 2024. In addition, we collaborate with Spectra Apartments at Marymoor Village, which offers community garden space (managed by Spectra) to all Redmond community members as well.
