The City’s commitment to youth programs prompted the award Redmond has been
named by America’s Promise—the Alliance for Youth as one of America’s 100 Best
Communities for Young People. In partnership with Capital One, the award
recognizes communities, from small towns to urban neighborhoods, for their
commitment to providing healthy, safe and caring environments for young people.
“Redmond’s future lies in our young people, so we are committed to providing
opportunities that support their growth both as individuals and citizens,” said
Mayor Rosemarie Ives. “We are thrilled America’s Promise—the Alliance for Youth
has honored us with this distinction.”
Redmond has been selected, in part, due to its opportunities for teens.
Redmond’s Old Fire House Teen Center is the longest-standing teen-only center in
the region and for the past 15 years has offered all age music shows and
programs, and more recently, a state-of-the-art recording studio. For young
people who want to contribute to society, Redmond’s Youth Partnership Advisory
Committee (RYPAC) offers community service opportunities. Youth can also
participate on the City’s boards and commissions and give direct input on issues
that impact Redmond as a whole. Additionally, the Counselor in Training Program
offered by the Parks and Recreation Department helps young people become leaders
in their community.
Among others, Redmond’s after-school program for elementary school children,
Neighborhood Schoolhouse, was also recognized. With tutoring programs and
activities like science, tennis and chess, kids are able to get continued
support after school hours.
“Nothing is more important than seeing that our children and youth have the
resources and support systems they need to succeed,” said America’s Promise
Founding Chairman General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.). “When a community
provides all that its young people need to be healthy and secure, they deserve
to be honored.”
The selection panel evaluated over 1,000 entries, requiring each community to
detail specific resources they provide to young people: caring adults who are
actively involved in their lives; safe places in which to learn and grow; a
healthy start toward adulthood; an effective education that builds marketable
skills; and opportunities to help others.
“We held this competition to appeal to America’s competitive spirit to
encourage communities to become great places to grow up.” said Marguerite W.
Kondracke, President and CEO of America’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth.
