Critical Areas Ordinance

The City of Redmond recently updated its Critical Areas Ordinance as mandated under State law. Designation and protection of critical areas is the first mandate of the Growth Management Act. Language was added to the Act in 1995 to ensure that jurisdictions include reliable scientific information in designating and protecting critical areas. The Best Available Science Rule took effect August 2000.

Staff produced a series of Best Available Science Review and Summary Papers. These are available in PDF format.  (In order to view or print these reports you must have the Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer.  Obtain free Acrobat Reader if necessary.)

The Planning Commission held two public hearings and a total of 13 study session to discuss the Update. On March 9th, the Commission unanimously recommended the City Council approve the Update. The Commission produced an Issues Matrix identifying all major issues and their resolutions. The City Council approved and passed the new Critical Areas Ordinance on May 17, 2005. The Ordinance became effective on May 28, 2005. For further information, contact Cathy Beam, AICP, project manager, at 556-2429 cbeam@redmond.gov.
