Municipal Campus Central Park

In conjunction with the new City Hall, the City has developed a master plan for a Municipal Campus Central Park that will stretch from the Sammamish River Trail into the heart of the City's campus.

Four concept alternatives were developed and evaluated with input from staff, boards and commissions, and the public.  Through the evaluation process, a Preferred Alternative emerged and was developed using a concept which had been modified to incorporate the input received during the review and evaluation process.  This draft was approved in June 2004 by the Parks Board, with revisions finalized in November.  The final master plan was approved by the Parks Board in January 2005.

The Central Park Master Plan was presented to City Council and adopted without funding in March 2005.  The final master plan will be available soon.  However, the current master plan draft can be viewed by clicking on the links below:

Principles and Goals Guiding the Master Planning Effort:
Reflect the Values of the Community

  • Support the living, recreation, social and cultural activities of the community
  • Provide a gathering place/community "Living Room" accommodating multi-generational users day and night
  • Ensure the Park's civic stature be integral with the campus facilities
  • Create open space(s) with distinct character that is comfortable in all seasons
  • Promote and support interactive experiences and educational opportunities
  • Recognize and integrate historical/cultural aspects of the community

Safe and Accessible

  • Provide an understandable circulation system and safe public access strengthening connections between park, river and larger community
  • Clarify points of entry into the Park
  • Provide visual cues into the Park from the surrounding community
  • Provide safe and clear links to parking reservoirs

Flexible Use of Space

  • Unify existing buildings and foresee the advent of new development and expansion on the campus
  • Provide a passive framework that promotes multi-purpose use
  • Provide open spaces that accommodate existing festivals and promote new events

Reflect Responsible Stewardship

  • Recognize and enhance the environmental/ecological systems, particularly along the river
  • Promote sustainable opportunities
  • Provide materials and furnishings of high quality promoting durability and ease of maintenance
  • Promote pride within the community
