The Redmond RiverWalk project
consists of habitat enhancement and amenity improvements along 1.3 miles of the Sammamish
River through downtown Redmond. The plan, developed by Jones and Jones and the City of Redmond, has four
main goals. |
| . |
|
. |
Recreate
the river's identity and strengthen its role
as a community and environmental asset. The river needs to be respectfully treated
and development along the river should embrace it. |
| . |
|
|
Create
stronger
pedestrian connections between the river corridor and
other parts of town, especially downtown. Existing pedestrian connections to
downtown Redmond are generally understated. The plan identifies stronger pedestrian
connections to and from downtown to assist trail users in arriving at their destinations. |
| . |
|
|
Enhance
water quality and riparian
habitat for fish, birds and mammals. Straightening of the river in the early to mid-1960s resulted in a highly altered and unnatural river system. Environmental
awareness and community and regional concern are refocusing to restore and enhance the
biological functions of this system. This plan strives to restore the riparian
corridor. |
| |
Provide
visual and physical access. Limiting and
controlling physical river access can ensure it does not impact habitat. Existing
footpaths down to the water's edge should be recognized. The plan provides
opportunities for visual access of the river that trail users can anticipate. |
