Since the 1970s, the City of Redmond has had a comprehensive plan in
place for the purpose of describing the community's long-term values and
goals and guiding Redmond's physical, economic, and social development
toward these goals. The Comprehensive Plan includes a preferred vision of what
the community will be like in the future, and policies to guide us in
achieving that vision. It also includes projections for future
growth used to plan for streets, parks, water, and other public
facilities and services.
In 2004, City Council adopted a major update of Redmond's
Comprehensive Plan to extend our long-range planning horizon to the year
2022, to reflect comments and preferences expressed by citizens at many
meetings and workshops, to address issues and opportunities facing the
City, and to include the preferred 20-year growth strategy selected by
City Council in 2003.
Eight goals, which were a major outcome of the 2003 Redmond Design
Day community workshop, form the basis for the Comprehensive Plan:
-
Conserve agricultural lands and
rural areas, and protect and enhance the quality of the natural
environment
-
Retain and enhance Redmond's
distinctive character and high quality of life, including an
abundance of parks, open space, good schools, and recreational
facilities
-
Emphasize choices in housing,
transportation, stores, and services
-
Support vibrant concentrations of
retail, office, service, residential, and recreational activity in
Downtown and in Overlake.
-
Maintain a strong and diverse economy, and
provide a better climate that retains and attracts locally
owned companies as well as internationally recognized corporations.
-
Promote a variety of community
gathering places and diverse cultural opportunities.
-
Provide convenient, safe and
environmentally friendly transportation connections within
Redmond, and between Redmond and other communities for people and
goods.
-
Remain a community of good neighbors, working together and
with others in the region to implement a common vision for Redmond's
future.
The updated Plan will continue to shape Redmond's future, just as
plans adopted in the 1970's have been responsible for transforming
Redmond from an agricultural community to a major employment center
while saving environmental features and open space.
