The Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP) provides
documentation of Redmond's stormwater management practices in comparison
to Washington State requirements. The State of Washington
Department of Ecology issued the City of Redmond, along with 78 other
cities and 5 counties, a permit titled Western Washington Phase II
Municipal Stormwater Permit (effective date of 2/16/2007). The
permit details specific stormwater management requirements all permittees are required to meet or exceed. The goal of the
permit is to lessen impacts from stormwater on receiving waters (creeks,
lakes, rivers, groundwater, the Puget Sound). In Redmond,
stormwater is runoff collected by catch basins (i.e. grates in
roads/parking lots) and transported in pipes to the nearest creek, the
Sammamish River, into the ground, or Lake Sammamish.
The SWMP is limited to Redmond programs and functions in response to
the permit. Redmond performs additional stormwater management
practices beyond what is required by the permit. An example would
be Redmond's Stormwater Regional Facilities Program. Redmond is
retrofitting large areas of the City with water quality infrastructure,
to clean up stormwater before it enters the Sammamish River. The
SWMP is a working document and is modified as stormwater management
practices change.
