The City of Redmond Street Department maintains streets within the City. As
part of that program the department conducts sanding and snow and ice removal
to mitigate the conditions during a snow and ice event.
While the program is designed to provide a safe roadway system, it will not
eliminate the impacts or effects of a snow and ice event.
Resources and Materials
The City of Redmond utilizes:
- Three 5-yard dump trucks with large plows and sanders
- One 1-ton truck with small plow and deicer unit
- Traction sand laid down with plowing
- Calcium Chloride for removal of compact snow
Priorities
The priority routes for snow and ice removal are monitored by City
staff on a regular basis in an effort to maintain traffic flow as near to
normal as possible. In events where snow and ice conditions are wide spread,
street personnel will prioritize based on the following:
- Hospitals and schools
- Arterials leading in and out of Redmond
- Arterials located on hills within Redmond
- All other arterials within Redmond
In situations where ice conditions are appearing in random areas of
the City, personnel will respond to situations that are reported by the
City of Redmond Police Department or other sources.
Please Note: The City does not plow
or sand residential neighborhoods because of available resources and size of
equipment.
Routing
During snow and ice events, City personnel and equipment are assigned to
three separate geographic areas:
- North Redmond
- Central/Downtown Redmond
- South Redmond
The deicer unit is used citywide for breaking up and removing compact
snow on hills and at signalized intersections.
Requests
To ensure better coordination and greater efficiency, staff can only
respond to specific requests for snow and ice removal from the City of Redmond
Police Department.
Recommendations
The program is designed to provide a safe roadway system, however it will
not eliminate the impacts or effects of a snow and ice event. So please:
- If at all possible, stay at home during a major snow event.
- If you must drive and you live in a neighborhood that is extremely
difficult to enter or exit because of snow or ice, we encourage
residents to consider other interim parking locations for accessing
plowed and sanded roadways.
