- Most bicycles are built to carry one person for a reason.
- Always wear a bicycle helmet
- Keep your bicycle in good mechanical condition.
- Obey all traffic rules and signs. Always give proper hand signals
and yield the right of way to pedestrians
- Never go so fast that you can't stop.
- Walk your bike across busy intersections by using the push button to
activate the pedestrian signal.
- Always ride with traffic - as close as possible to the right side of the
road.
- Be sure the roadway is clear before entering.
- Always ride single file and watch for opening vehicle doors.
- If you must ride your bike at night be sure your headlight and
reflectors are in good condition.
- Select the safest route to your destination and use it. Avoid busy
intersections.
- Wear reflective clothing and have proper reflectors and lights on your
bicycle.
- Lock your bicycle when you are not using it.
- Wear bright colored clothing. At night, carry a flashlight
or wear reflective material.
- Walk facing traffic.
- Cross only at corners where drivers can see you.
- Always use a crosswalk when it is available, but remember
painted lines cannot force drivers to stop.
- Obey signs and signals.
- Stop at the curb or edge of the street while waiting to cross,
not behind objects that could conceal you or block your view.
- Be sure the way is clear before you cross. Always look
left, right, then left again.
- Watch out for vehicles backing up and turning.
- Walk across the street - do not run.
- Continue looking until you have crossed the street.
