Duties:
Under the direction of the Communications Supervisor, uphold the department's
mission, "To provide quality policing in partnership with the community." The
Lead Dispatcher will help to ensure the efficient operation of the 911 center
and that customer service (internal and external) delivery is being met.
Provides oversight of the day-to-day operation of the Communications Center, as
directed by the Communications Supervisor. The Lead Dispatcher will also
perform a full range of communication and dispatch functions necessary to
support police officers in their duties. May make recommendations for changes
in operating procedures. As assigned, conducts research and handles routine
administrative assignments on behalf of the Communication Supervisor. Develops
and conducts in-service training; trains or assists in training new
dispatchers. Responsible for the maintenance of maps, manuals and other
resource materials used in the Communications Center. Provides input on and
assists in resolving dispatcher performance issues.
Qualifications:
Skill in: the use of personal computer, software, computer aided dispatching and
all related communications equipment; gaining cooperation from co-workers and
directing the work of others; efficiently handling detailed administrative
assignments; good basic math skills.
Ability to: communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; establish and
maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, other employees, and
the general public; solve complex dispatching situations in a timely, efficient,
and calm manner; think clearly and act quickly, calmly and courteously in
emergency situations; properly evaluate and prioritize situations, determine
availability of police units, and properly dispatch them to the scene.
Knowledge of: public safety communications practices, procedures and techniques;
customer service issues related to working in a 911 center; and communications
equipment sufficient to trouble-shoot and solve routine problems.
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. and minimum two years of work experience in 911
emergency radio dispatching.
Licenses and Other Requirements:
Must possess a valid Washington State driver's license by date of hire
and maintain an insurable driving record by City standards. Polygraph,
psychological and medical exams, drug screening, and extensive background
investigation will be required of candidates being considered for
hire.
Working Conditions:
Work is primarily performed in an office environment. Variable work schedule
may include evenings, weekends or holidays. Act as 24 hour on-call resource for
dispatchers. May be required to occasionally lift boxes or files, usually not
exceeding 30 pounds.

AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFIERS:
The City of Redmond Police Department will automatically disqualify any
individual who has at any time:
Been convicted of a felony (or pled nolo contendere to a felony charge) or any
offense that would be a felony if committed in Washington State, or has been
incarcerated for any crime.
Sold marijuana, narcotics or dangerous drugs.
All illegal drug use will be closely scrutinized on a case by case basis.
Been dishonorably discharged from the United States armed forces.
Had a pattern of abusing prescription medication.
Received more than two moving traffic violations within the preceding 3 years;
or reckless driving violation within the preceding 5 years; or driving while
license suspended within the preceding 5 years; or driving while intoxicated
within the preceding 5 years.
Been involved in more than one motor vehicle accident within the preceding 3
years for which the applicant received a traffic or criminal citation and was
convicted, forfeited bail, or entered a plea of "guilty" or "nolo contendere".
Been previously employed as a law enforcement agent and since has committed or
violated federal, state or city laws pertaining to criminal activity.
Committed any serious violation of Federal, State, City or County laws.
Lied during any stage of the hiring process.
Falsified personal history questionnaire or application, or failed to disclose
pertinent information.
Been convicted of any crime under a domestic violence statute.
Unlawful sexual misconduct.
DISCRETIONARY DISQUALIFIERS:
The following disqualifiers may, upon review by the Redmond Police Department,
make you ineligible to become a City of Redmond Lead Communications Dispatcher:
- Alcohol or substance misuse and/or abuse.
- Excessive traffic violations.
- Commission of a felony.
- A demonstrated unwillingness to honor fiscal contracts or just
debts.
- Any other conduct or pattern of conduct that would tend to disrupt,
diminish, or otherwise jeopardize public trust in the law enforcement
profession.
- An inability to perform the essential functions of a Lead
Communications Dispatcher.
