Wellhead Protection Intern

SALARY:  $11.35 to $19.75 per hour

HOURS:  Requires a commitment of 520 hours during the academic summer break (approximately June 16 through September 19, 2008) with the opportunity to work up to 1040 hours over one year (full-time during the summer with the remaining half of the allotted hours spread throughout the 2008/2009 academic year). Flexibility and consideration will be given for academic pursuits and schedule.

Duties:
The City is offering a paid internship position to gain valuable experience and skills managing environmental data. Under the direction of the City's Groundwater Technician, assist with the development and implementation of the Wellhead Protection Program's Environmental Database. The database is in development (in EarthSoft's EQuIS version 5.3) to capture and analyze geological, hydrogeological, and hydrologic information. Information to be managed includes: lithology/soils data and well logs, groundwater and surface water elevation data, chemical analytical data, and contaminated sites/cleanup related data. The intern will review and capture data from historical monitoring of groundwater monitoring wells, water supply wells, and surface water bodies, then process it and enter the data into the environmental database. Synthesis of this data will be a key component in the Wellhead Protection Program's goal to produce a Comprehensive Contaminant Source Inventory Map and a risk-based Hazard Classification Map.

Duties for the intern will include, but are not limited to: following standard operating procedures and policies for data management; researching, compiling, entering, and processing a variety of technical data from various types of data sources and formats; preparing all associated documentation including development of a bibliography of data sources; and performing limited other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of: environmental data, gathering and analysis techniques, and database or spreadsheet software (such as EQuIS, MS Access, or MS Excel).
Skill in: conducting research investigations and preparing, organizing, and maintaining records, files, and relational databases or spreadsheets.
Ability to: think conceptually and mathematically; observe and evaluate trends and draw logical conclusions; organize and document data and analysis including quality assurance/quality control; communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing; meet and engage with co-workers in an effective, pleasant, and courteous manner; work in a professional setting; be punctual; take initiative and work with minimal supervision and instruction; prioritize and organize their workload; and use MS Office software (Word, Outlook).

Education and Experience:

Currently enrolled (or recent graduate) working toward a college degree in geology, hydrogeology, environmental science, or a closely-related field.

Licenses/Requirements:
Valid Washington State driver's license required by date of hire and a driving record that meets the City's driving standards.

Working Conditions:
Work will be conducted in an office environment at Redmond City Hall.
