HOURS: Requires a commitment of 520 hours
during the academic summer break (approximately June 16 through September 19,
2008) with the opportunity to work up to 1040 hours over one year (full-time
during the summer with the remaining half of the allotted hours spread
throughout the 2008/2009 academic year). Flexibility and consideration will be
given for academic pursuits and schedule.

Duties:
The City is offering a paid internship opportunity to gain valuable
experience and skills managing environmental data, field data collection
methods, monitor stormwater outfalls, investigate and identify pollution
sources. Under the direction of the City's Pollution Prevention Program
Administrator, assist with the development and implementation of the City's
Pollution Prevention Program Environmental Database.
Duties may include but are not limited to: following standard operating
procedures and policies for data management; research, compile, enter, and
process a variety of historical monitoring technical data from various types of
sources and formats into computer database program (EarthSoft's EQuIS version
5.3) and prepare a bibliography of data sources. Environmental information to be
managed includes: stream flow rates, stream and storm water quality parameters,
surface water elevation data, chemical analytical data, and environmental spill
response related data. May also conduct field activities such as assist with;
conducting assessments of stormwater outfalls, survey locations with global
positioning system (GPS) equipment; map, record and photograph outfalls, and
conduct water quality monitoring and performing limited other duties as
assigned. Synthesis of this data will be a key component in the development of a
City-wide Comprehensive Contaminant Source Inventory Map and a risk-based Hazard
Classification Map.
Qualifications:
Knowledge of: environmental data, gathering and analysis techniques, and
database or spreadsheet software (such as EQuIS, MS Access, or MS Excel).
Skill in: conducting research investigations and preparing, organizing, and
maintaining records, files, and relational databases or spreadsheets.
Ability to: think conceptually and mathematically; observe and evaluate trends
and draw logical conclusions; organize and document data and analysis including
quality assurance/quality control; communicate clearly, both verbally and in
writing; meet and engage with co-workers in an effective, pleasant, and
courteous manner; work in a professional setting; be punctual; take initiative
and work with minimal supervision and instruction; prioritize and organize their
workload; and use MS Office software (Word, Outlook).
Education and Experience:
Currently enrolled (or recent graduate) working toward a college degree in
Environmental Sciences, Biology, Geology, Engineering, Hydrogeology,
Environmental Planning, or a closely related field. Experience utilizing stream
flow monitoring equipment and water quality instrumentation and relational
databases is a plus but not required.
Licenses/Requirements:
Valid Washington State driver's license required by date of hire and a
driving record that meets the City's driving standards.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an office environment some fieldwork may be required. Must
be able to climb ladders, walk over rough and uneven surfaces, and lift up to 20
pounds.
