Transportation Planning Intern - Projects

SALARY:  $11.35 - $21.77 per hour (Intern level I-III, determined based on qualifications)
DATE OPEN:  Friday, February 15, 2008
DATE CLOSED:  Open until filled
HOURS:  Flexible hours, available to work 15-20 hours per week during school year and potentially additional hours during school breaks and summer.  This is a one-year internship with the possibility of a second year.

Duties:
Under the direction of the Senior Transportation Planning staff, perform planning and technical assistance in support of transportation related projects and programs within the City of Redmond. Responsible for performing work in such areas as development of transportation policy; implementation of transportation projects, including bicycle and pedestrian programs; transportation data collection, entry, processing and analysis; geographic information system (GIS); and performing other duties as assigned. Learn and apply planning principles and techniques, including land use and transportation concepts, urban development, community involvement and project implementation.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of: familiar with urban planning, urban design, data gathering and analysis techniques, and/or other specialized fields relevant to planning.
Ability to:
communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing; organize and document project information and data; meet and engage with co-workers, other agencies, the community, commissions and elected officials in an effective, pleasant and courteous manner; ability to prioritize workload and work independently; and familiar with MS Office software (Word, Excel, Access) and ESRI ArcMap.

Education & Experience:
Currently working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in transportation planning, urban planning, geography, engineering or a closely related field. Students early in their college career are encouraged to apply.

Licenses/Requirements:
Valid Washington State driver's license required by date of hire and a driving record that meets the City’s driving standards.

Working Conditions:
Work is primarily performed in an office with some field work required. The position may include work outdoors in inclement weather. Attendance at meetings may require working evening hours.
