Duties:
This entry-level maintenance position performs skilled manual work and specialized equipment operation in the construction, maintenance, and repair of parks facilities and grounds. Duties include but are not limited to repairing and maintaining parks grounds, including setting up playing fields, mowing and edging grass, raking leaves, pruning and trimming trees, planting and maintaining flower beds, applying chemicals and fertilizers, and removing brush and trash; repairing and maintaining irrigation systems; performing safety inspections of playground equipment and grounds and making necessary repairs; assisting with the general maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and structures involving basic carpentry, mechanical, plumbing and painting; performing routine janitorial services including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, cleaning restrooms, and removing trash; operating a variety of hand and power tools, and specialized equipment; preparing parks for public events; responding to emergency call-out situations as necessary; and performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of: work methods, procedures, materials, tools and equipment related to park maintenance, athletic field preparation and maintenance; and horticultural principles and practices.
Skill in: safe use of relevant hand tools and powered equipment.
Ability to: follow written and verbal instructions; learn and operate various job-related equipment; work independently and in cooperation with others; and communicate effectively orally and in writing with the public and all levels of City staff.

Education and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to High School diploma and one (1) year grounds, landscape or sport field repair, maintenance and construction experience.

Licenses/Requirements:
Valid WA State Class A driver’s license and pesticide applicator’s license or ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire. Driving record must meet City standards.  Ability to pass a D.O.T. physical and drug screen required. Fulfillment of bargaining unit agreement membership is required within 30 days of hire.

Working Conditions:
Outdoor work environment subject to seasonal heat and adverse weather conditions; exposure to chemicals, paints, pesticides and dust; and physical hazard from mechanical and electrical equipment. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
