Transportation Planning Intern (Modeling & Analysis)

SALARY:  $11.35 - $21.77 per hour (Intern level I-III, determined based on qualifications)

HOURS:  Flexible hours, available to work 15-20 hours per week during school year and potentially additional hours during school breaks and summer 2008.

Duties:
Under the direction of the Senior Transportation Planning staff, perform planning and technical assistance in support of transportation related projects and programs within the City of Redmond. Responsible for performing work in such areas as travel demand modeling and forecasting; traffic data collection, entry, processing and analysis; geographic information system (GIS) analysis; disseminating and gathering information using the City’s Web site; and performing other duties as assigned. Learn and apply planning principles and techniques, including land use and transportation concepts, urban development, demography and statistics.

Qualifications:
Knowledge of: data gathering and analysis techniques, database and Web page design and/or other specialized fields relevant to planning.
Ability to:
think conceptually and mathematically, observe and evaluate trends, and draw logical conclusions; gather, analyze, evaluate and synthesize transportation data; learn about and assist in the travel demand modeling; organize and document data and analysis; ability to prioritize workload; communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing; meet and engage with co-workers, other agencies, the community, commissions and elected officials in an effective, pleasant and courteous manner; and use MS Office software (Word, Excel, Access, FrontPage) and ESRI ArcMap.

Education & Experience:
Currently working toward a bachelor’s or master’s degree in transportation planning, urban planning, geography, engineering, mathematics or a closely related field.

Licenses/Requirements:
Valid Washington State driver's license required by date of hire and a driving record that meets the City’s driving standards.

Working Conditions:
Work is primarily performed in an office with some field work required. The position may include work outdoors in inclement weather. Attendance at meetings may require working evening hours.
