Inspection Program

Business License | Confidence Test | Independent Inspection Program | King County Fire District 34 | Maintenance |
New Construction & Tenant Improvement | Operations | Special | International Fire Code Permit

The Redmond Fire Department inspection program is designed to encompass a variety of fire code issues and other concerns that property and business owners face in the City of Redmond and King County Fire District 34.  If you would like to request one of these inspections or if you have other fire code related concerns, please submit an inspection request.

Business License Inspections:
The City of Redmond requires a Business License for all businesses operating within the city limits, with the exception of insurers or their agents (RMC 5.04.130, 6). The Redmond Fire Department  reviews and signs all applications before a license is issued. The review may include an immediate inspection for Uniform Fire Code compliance, or scheduling of a maintenance inspection at a future date. The Business License Inspection allows the RFD to be informed about building use or occupancy changes that could increase hazards to the building and occupants. The Redmond Fire Prevention Division administrates and determines the appropriate steps required to process the Business License Application.  For more information on applying for a business license, see the Business License page.

Confidence Test Inspections:
The Redmond Fire Department requires a contractor performing confidence inspections to forward test results/reports to the Redmond Fire Prevention Division.  Fire protection systems and equipment are required to be maintained in good working condition at all times. Confidence tests on these systems ensure that they are functioning properly. Inspections will be generated to ensure that deficiencies noted on the confidence test reports are repaired.

Independent Inspection Program:
The Redmond Fire Department (RFD) has established specific standards and requirements to allow independent inspections of large multi-building complexes or campuses (Complexes). This program is designed to be a cooperative effort to ensure fire and life safety code compliance. The RFPD will establish and oversee the program while the complex staff will schedule and complete inspections under the parameters of this program. The goal is to provide these complexes with a greater frequency and more convenient means of inspections.  Please contact us if you would like to speak to your District Inspector about the possibilities of implementing this program at your complex.

King County Fire District 34 Inspections:
The Redmond Fire Department carries out three types of inspections for Citizens in King County Fire District 34:

  • Land Clear Burn Permits:  RFD/King County Fire District 34 allows land clearing burning in designated areas of the fire district during the months of March, April, May, October, November, and December. Prior to a permit being issued, the burn site shall be inspected by a RFPD Fire Inspector.  Residential Burn Permits do not require inspections.
  • District Receipts:  The King County receipt program enables the RFD/King County Fire District 34 to have input on site plan review requirements for new construction of commercial and residential projects.  To apply for a district receipt, please email us or contact 425-556-2246.
  • Permitted Compliance:  The King County Fire Marshal's office (KCFMO) contracts with the Redmond Fire Department (RFD) for International  Fire Code (IFC) permit compliance inspections. The Redmond Fire Prevention Division administers and completes inspections for the KCFMO.

Maintenance Inspections:
The Redmond Fire Prevention Division administers the Fire and Life Safety Maintenance Inspection program for the Redmond Fire Department. Fire and Life Safety Maintenance Inspections are performed at all occupancies within the Redmond City limits except single family residences. Fire Inspectors are responsible to enforce International Fire Code (UFC) compliance and to maintain records of all activities within their inspection district. The IFC permit program, the business license inspection program, and the degree of hazards existing in the building shall prioritize the scheduling of inspections.

New Construction & Tenant Improvement Inspections:
The Fire Prevention Division provides permitting, plan review and inspection services to ensure that buildings are safe for the citizens of Redmond.  New Construction and Tenant Improvement Inspections cover permitted construction work including:

If you have questions regarding the plan review section of New Construction and Tenant Improvement permits, please contact 425-556-2246.  You may request a New Construction or Tenant Improvement Inspection here.

Operations Inspections:
The Redmond Fire Prevention Division administers the Operations Division inspection program for the Redmond Fire Department. Inspections are performed at all occupancies not requiring International Fire Code (IFC) Permits within the Redmond city limits except single family residences.  Operations inspections are typically completed by fire suppression crews.  If you have had an operations inspection done at your business and have questions regarding it, please contact Fire Department headquarters at 425-556-2200.

Special Inspections:
Special Inspections are intended to identify code violations or reveal unsafe situations which may present themselves during special events, peak occupancy times, or in response to a citizen complaint.  Please contact us if you would like to request an Inspection of this type.

International Fire Code Permit Inspections
The City of Redmond Fire Department (RFD) has adopted the International Fire Code (IFC) as specified in the Community Development Guide, (CDG) Chapter 20E.100.10 Fire Code. The RFD permit program will be based on Section 105 of the IFC. An IFC permit constitutes permission to maintain, store, use or handle materials, or conduct processes which produce conditions hazardous to life or property. A permit also constitutes permission to install equipment used in connection with such activities. This permission shall not be construed as authority to violate, cancel, or set aside any of the provisions of this code. A permit shall not take the place of any license required by law or other governmental agency.
