Redmond Fire Department responds to fire and medical emergencies within
a 45-square-mile area that includes the city of Redmond and the
surrounding area of
unincorporated King County known as King County Fire Protection District
34.
Our mission is to
continuously protect and preserve life and property through quality
education, prevention, disaster preparedness, and rapid emergency
response.
The department is directed by Fire Chief Tim K. Fuller. He was
recruited as the Fire Chief in 2005. Chief Fuller moved to
Seattle after retiring as Fire Chief from the St. Paul, Minnesota Fire Department.
Under the Fire Chief, the department is divided into
major divisions that are managed by three deputy chiefs:
The Deputy Chief of Operations manages the Fire Suppression
and Training Divisions.
The Deputy Chief of Services manages the Prevention Division,
Public Education Division, Apparatus Maintenance Division, and develops
the department's budget.
The
Deputy Chief of Emergency Medical Services
manages basic life support provided by our Firefighter-EMTs
(Emergency Medical Technicians) and advanced life support provided by
our Paramedics.
Chief Fuller also directs the managers of the Emergency Preparedness
Division and the Administrative Support Division.
There are currently 137 dedicated employees in the Redmond Fire
Department, including firefighters, driver/operators, lieutenants,
captains, battalion chiefs, paramedics, and medical services officers that are stationed at our six fire
stations in Redmond and unincorporated King County (Fire District
34), Kirkland's Fire Station 26, Evergreen Hospital, and Woodinville's
Fire Station 35. Located at Redmond City Hall, our prevention personnel
include the Fire Marshal, Assistant Fire Marshals, Fire Inspectors, and
support staff. Administrative personnel include the Fire Chief, Deputy
Chiefs, Emergency Preparedness Manager, Public Information Officer,
Training Battalion Chief, Training Captain, Administrative Supervisor, support staff, and mechanics.
All of the many services we perform, from fire safety education and fire prevention inspections
to fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical response and transportation to area hospitals,
support the mission of the fire department. All firefighters
have multiple functions and are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians
(EMT). EMTs are capable of delivering "basic life
support" (BLS) to sick or injured people. This includes skills like
CPR, bandaging, recognizing dangerous medical emergencies, and
treatment with oxygen and defibrillation. They are also trained to
perform vehicle rescue, hazardous material response and mitigation,
non-emergency service calls, emergency apparatus and equipment
maintenance, urban search and rescue (USAR), high and low angle rescue
including swift and standing water rescue, fire and life safety
inspections, fire code enforcement, and blood pressure screening.
In January 2003, Redmond Fire Department became the lead agency for the
Medic One program in Northeast King County and hired 26 paramedics and
staff from Evergreen Healthcare, thus ensuring a tiered medical response
to the region. The paramedics deliver "advanced
life support" (ALS) to the citizens. The "chain of survival"
begins with the 911 call and dispatch of the closest BLS/fire crew with EMT
capabilities. If the incident requires advanced life support, a
paramedic unit is dispatched and is able to perform advanced medical skills and treatments. While the patient is with their
"response team," they are stabilized and transported to the closest
hospital that can handle their problem. This program further enhances the medical services
provided by the department.
