Children 5 and under are more than twice as likely to die in fires as are older children and adults. Most fatalities involve fires started by preschoolers, fires caused by faulty heating equipment or the careless use of smoking materials, and fires that are set intentionally (arson).
It is a proven fact that teaching preschool and kindergarten children to be fire-safe can save lives.
The number one risk for children ages 14 and under is not kidnapping, drugs, or disease—it's injuries.
The statistics are staggering. Traffic injuries, drowning, fires and burns, firearm injuries, falls, poisonings, and unintentional injuries kill more than 7,000 kids and permanently disable more than 50,000 each year. That's more than drugs and disease combined. Thirteen million children—one in four—are injured seriously enough to require medical attention. With proper education, children can learn to be much safer and prevent injuries. Here are some links to other safety web sites of interest.
