Redmond has a strong Mayor/Council, non-partisan form of government. Seven council members and the Mayor are each elected directly by the people for staggered four-year terms. All represent the community at large. The City Council establishes City law and policy by passing ordinances and resolutions. The Council also adopts the city budget, approves appropriations, contracts in the City's name, levies taxes, and grants franchises.
The City Council encourages citizens to come to Council meetings. We meet on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of Redmond's
City Hall Building. Business meetings, where we vote to take action on agenda items, are scheduled for the first and third Tuesday while study sessions or special meetings are scheduled for the alternate Tuesdays. All meetings are televised live on RCTV
Channel 21.
Items From the Audience is a feature of each business meeting to provide citizens with an opportunity to address the Council about issues not on the formal agenda. You can sign up to speak before each meeting begins, limiting your remarks to four minutes.
Look at the Council Extended Agenda to see other meetings where a public voice is encouraged.
A City of Redmond Government Guide (pdf) is available to help answer some of the
questions of how the City's government works including duties and
responsibilities of Boards and Commissions, the City Council and the Hearing
Examiner. The Guide also defines land-use terms and the Public Hearing
process.
An audiotape of each business Council meeting is available at the Redmond Library. All Council meetings are shown unedited on
RCTV live on Tuesday evenings, as taped replays on Wednesday, 10:00 am and Thursday, 7:30 pm
and OnDemand anytime.
Agendas and meeting summaries are available online or may be requested through the City Clerk's office (425-556-2190). |
