Home & Kit Prep

There is a general list of actions to be accomplished in order to truly be prepared. The planning booklet prepared by the State of Washington Department of Health, "Emergency Response Guide", was updated in 2007 and provides a lot of detail on the subject. The booklet is available by order in hard copy or for download at their website. If that copy is not available from their website, a downloaded copy is available here. The file is 5 megs in size and seems to download slowly, so be patient.

Basics

Some of the basic items you should stock in your home are water & food, first aid, clothing and bedding, tools, and any special items.  Keep the items you will most likely need during an evacuation in an easy-to-carry container such as a large, covered trash container, camping backpack or duffel bag. Keep a smaller version of the kit in your car and at work. For longer term, you should be prepared to purify water.

Store at least a 3-day supply of non-perishable food for each person, as well as one gallon of water per person per day. Select foods that require no refrigeration, cooking or preparation. Select food items that are compact and lightweight and rotate the food supply every 6 months paying attention to expiration dates.

Keep 2 first aid kits - one for your home and one for your car.
