172 Avenue NE
Traffic Calming Project
No. 101183

Description
Construction of the 172 Avenue NE Traffic Calming Project No. 101183 begins the week of September 15.  (Click on the link provided to see the complete timetable.)  This project constructs some of the features that were identified in the City Council approved preferred design concept for the 172 Avenue NE corridor.  Other traffic calming, safety, and road design elements will be constructed later - some by the City of Redmond and others by private developers.  The goal of the project is to create future traffic conditions that support controlled vehicular speeds along the corridor, discourage regional through traffic, and protect the character of this North Redmond neighborhood.

The link provided will allow you to view the July 15 City Council meeting Award of Bid memo and the project vicinity map.

The work to be performed under this contract shall include the construction of traffic calming improvements on 172 Avenue NE between NE 111 and NE 122 Street and on NE 111 Street approximately 300 feet west of 172 Avenue NE.  Specific traffic calming improvements are listed below.

Specific improvements by the City that will be implemented on 172 Avenue NE include:

  • half-street speed humps adjacent to existing medians on NE 111 Street near 172 Avenue NE
  • curb extensions and landscaped medians on the south and east legs at the intersection of 172 Avenue NE and NE 111 Street
  • a raised crosswalk at the Puget Sound Energy trail
  • five speed cushions at selected locations along the corridor
  • a landscaped median on the west leg of NE 115 Street
  • curb extensions at NE 119 Street, NE 121 Street, and NE 122 Street
  • pavement markings and striping to narrow the vehicle lanes, to add on-street bicycle lanes from NE 111 to NE 116 Street, and to define zones of on-street parking from NE 112 to NE 116 Street

Features that the City will also be responsible for, but that are NOT part of the present traffic calming project include:

  • a roundabout with marked crosswalks at the intersection of NE 116 Street and 172 Avenue NE (tentatively planned for construction in 2010, this project is currently in design)
  • opening the extension of 172 Avenue NE to all traffic no later than 2016
  • traffic calming from NE 124 to NE 128 Street at the time of the extension opening to maintain residential speeds
  • full City street improvements from NE 124 to NE 128 Street following possible annexation

Future improvements along the corridor that are not part of the City's current traffic calming efforts, but that will be funded by future private development include:

  • on-going developer frontage improvements on 172 Avenue NE and NE 122 Street which implement the corridor study preferred alternative including traffic circles at NE 112 Street, NE 117 Way, NE 122 Street, and NE 123 Street
  • on-going developer construction of the 172 Avenue NE extension for emergency vehicles and pedestrian access
  • a traffic signal at the intersection of NE 124 Street and 162 Avenue NE (planned for 2011, provided that signal warrants are met in 2010)
  • full street improvements on the extension of 172 Avenue NE (with interim restriction of through traffic to emergency vehicles and non-motorized traffic)
  • incremental construction of traffic calming and street design on both corridors as development occurs
