172 Avenue NE from NE 111 to NE 128 Street is currently
experiencing vehicular speeds close to or more than 10 MPH
over the posted speed limit. The primary emphasis of the
172 Avenue NE Neighborhood Traffic Calming Project will be on
reducing traffic
speeds, discouraging regional through traffic,
and protecting the neighborhood's character.
Specific improvements planned for 172 Avenue NE include:
- half-street speed humps adjacent to existing medians on
NE 111 Street near 172 Avenue NE
- curb extensions and landscaped medians on the south and
east legs at the intersection of 172 Avenue NE and NE 111
Street
- a raised crosswalk at the Puget Sound Energy trail
- five speed cushions at selected locations along the
corridor
- a landscaped median on the west leg of NE 115 Street
- curb extensions at
NE 119 Street, NE 121 Street, and NE 122 Street
- pavement markings and striping to narrow the vehicle
lanes, to add on-street bicycle lanes from NE 111 to NE 116
Street, and to define zones of on-street parking from NE 112
to NE 116 Street
Future improvements along the corridor that are
not
included in this project:
- on-going developer frontage improvements on 172 Avenue
NE and NE 122 Street which implement the corridor study
preferred
alternative including
traffic circles at NE 112 Street, NE 117 Way, NE 122
Street, and NE 123 Street
- on-going developer construction of the 172 Avenue NE
extension for emergency vehicles and pedestrian access
- a roundabout with marked crosswalks at the intersection
of NE 116 Street and 172 Avenue NE (planned for construction
in 2010)
- a traffic signal at the intersection of NE 124 Street
and 162 Avenue NE (planned for 2011, provided that signal
warrants are met in 2010)
- opening of the 172 Avenue NE extension to all traffic
(planned for 2016, or 5 years after the installation of the
traffic signal at NE 124 Street and 162 Avenue NE)
