Fire Prevention
Fire Prevention Statistics

City role: significant - indirect
Fires spreading beyond room of origin; fire investigation reports where damage exceeds $10,000; and occupancies inspected for fire safety.

Fires spreading beyond room of origin. In 2014, no fire in a structure with fire sprinklers spread beyond its room of origin. By contrast, in structures without sprinklers, 2 of 6 fires spread beyond their rooms of origin in 2014.

Fire inspections. The Fire Department maintains a three-year inspection cycle for all buildings. In 2014, the Prevention Inspection Program inspected 63% of inspectable occupancies. This number is down from 2013 because of an extensive review and reconstruction of the process in the second half of 2014. The Operations inspection program is expected to resume in 2015. The objective is to inspect all city commercial and multi-family buildings every three years, while inspecting higher risk occupancies every year.
