The City of Redmond will host a reception to honor the opening of
a new exhibit of Dudley Carter drawings. The reception is on
Thursday, July 9 at 6pm in Redmond City Hall, 15670 NE 85th Street.
These drawings and collages are on long-term loan to the City from
the Redmond Historical Society.
Dudley Carter was born in British Columbia in 1891 and spent his
youth in the timber industry in the Pacific Northwest. His
artistic career began in 1930 at the age of 39. He
participated in the 1939 Golden Gate International Exposition where
he met Diego Rivera and was featured in Rivera's mural Pan American
Unity.
Carter is most known for his monumental sculptures carved with a
double-bladed axe in the style of the Haida people. Several of
his sculptures are located in Redmond and Marymoor Park, while his
hand-crafted Haida House sits in Slough Park. Carter died in
1992.
Following the reception, at 7pm, the Redmond Arts Commission will
host the Redmond Parks and Trails Commission and the Redmond
Landmarks Commission to present park concepts and themes for Slough
Park (the Dudley Carter site), located on the Sammamish River at the
intersection of Leary Way and 159th Place NE. This meeting is
the beginning of the process to develop a master plan for the park.
A series of
public meetings asking for input on various stages of
the park master plan will be scheduled for the summer and fall.
All meetings will be announced on the City's website and through the
media.
