The Sound Transit Board of Directors approved a new
Operations Task Force to look at current service approaches
and search for ways to make the services more efficient and
effective. Redmond Mayor John Marchione was appointed to the
six-member task force, along with King County Council Chair
Julia Patterson, Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow, Issaquah City
Council Deputy President Fred Butler and Edmonds City
Council member Deanna Dawson. The task force will be led by
Sound Transit Board member and King County Council Vice
Chair Dow Constantine.
The task force will compare Sound Transit's current operational
costs with other similar agencies while reviewing industry standards
for operations and maintenance benchmarks. They will seek out
opportunities for more efficient overall operations costs and will
also consider policy options to address parking constraints at Sound
Transit facilities.
“With my background in finance, I’m looking forward to reviewing
Sound Transit’s current operations for potential efficiencies,”
states Mayor Marchione. “In today’s fiscal times, all organizations
must look seriously at how to deliver effectively without increasing
costs. We are doing very similar things within Redmond’s City
government”
Ridership on Sound Transit's regional system has steadily risen
since its first passengers in 1999. In 2007, almost 14 million
riders used Sound Transit services, a 12 percent increase over 2006.
About 50,000 riders a day take Sound Transit services between
Everett, Tacoma, Redmond, Bellevue, Seattle and points in between.
