Aggressive Driving Enforcement
On Monday October 22nd the
City of Redmond will be installing new road signs which read “REPORT
AGGRESSIVE DRIVING CALL 911.” These signs will be posted on each of
the main arterials that lead into the Redmond city limits. The
purpose of these signs is to create public awareness about the
problem of aggressive driving. The signs are also intended to remind
the public to dial 911 when they witness an aggressive driving
incident.
In conjunction with the posting of these signs the Redmond Police
Department will be implementing a week long aggressive driving
enforcement operation entitled Operation Safe Driver. We would like
to invite all interested media to visit the Redmond Police
Department on Monday October 22nd at 10:00am to view our aggressive
driving vehicles and road signs.
Operation Safe Driver is a special enforcement event that will
involve the entire RPD Traffic Division. Officers will be driving
completely unmarked police vehicles to focus all of their time on
stopping aggressive drivers. Enforcement efforts will be focused on
those violations that constitute aggressive driving; speeding,
unsafe lane change(s), and following too close. In addition,
Officers will also be strictly enforcing the use of seatbelts.
Educating the public on the importance of identifying and
avoiding aggressive driving behavior is very important to the police
department. Aggressive driving leads to assaults, traffic
collisions, and sometimes serious injury or death. In April of 2006
aggressive driving was a major contributing factor to the cause of a
single motor vehicle fatality collision. It is imperative that the
motoring public understand the signs of aggressive drivers and avoid
any potential situations.
The police department routinely receives 911 calls from the
motoring public regarding “aggressive” or “road rage” type drivers.
From January to July of this year the police department has issued
over 100 citations for aggressive or negligent driving. We have also
sent approximately 115 warning letters to the registered owners of
the alleged offender vehicles. The police department is committed to
educating the public and enforcing the law to make the roadways
safer for the public.
Any questions regarding Operation Safe Driver should be directed
to LT Malcolm Frederick. The police
department’s newly designed aggressive driving pamphlet is linked
below. Be Patient,
Be Courteous, Be Safe!!
