Is that a bike or a bike rack in front of the Redmond Library? It’s
both as well as a pilot project being funded by the City of
Redmond’s Bicycle Facilities Improvement Program.
Bicycling is an increasingly popular way to get around Redmond
for exercise, to run errands or to commute to work. An important
part of any bicycle trip is having a convenient and secure place to
park your bike when you arrive at your destination.
“As part of the City’s on-going efforts to promote bicycling, we
have installed a bike rack that looks like a bicycle on NE 85 Street
in front of the library,” says Joel Pfundt, Principal Planner for
the City of Redmond’s Transportation Services Division. “It’s an
eye-catching, yet functional, piece of street art.”
The Bike Bike Rack promotes bicycling while providing a safe
place for cyclists to park their bikes. The rack allows both wheels
and frame to be secured using a u-style bike lock, an anti-theft
device that is significantly more effective than traditional chain
or cable locks. Two to four bikes can easily be locked parallel to
the rack, leaving the sidewalk clear for pedestrian traffic.
The City is interested in knowing what residents think about the
new bike rack and has provided an
online
survey on the City’s website. Comments will help determine if
the City should install more of these types of bike racks at other
downtown locations.
Guidance on how bicycle funds are spent in Redmond is provided by
the Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Committee.
