Kitchen CrewWhile the focus of the RSC is primarily on recreation, we recognize that the older adults in Redmond have additional needs that can be well served at the RSC. To enhance quality of life for RSC participants, we have developed partnerships with several social service agencies and service providers to offer programs.


Nutrition program

Daily Hot Lunch Program

In partnership with Catholic Community Services, the RSC serves nutritionally balanced meals Monday through Friday. Each meal is planned to senior tastes and is low in fat and sodium. Click RSC Monthly Menu on the left-hand navigation links to see a copy of the current menu.

Lunch program basic information:

  • LunchThe suggested donation for those age 60 or better is $3. The price for those under age 60 is $6.00 and is not a donation. Spouses of persons age 60 or better qualify for the reduced suggested donation. In order to participate in the program, our funding requires that each participant have a completed form on file. The ticket window opens at 10 am. No reservations; first-come, first-served. A limited number of meals are available each day. While we strive to feed everyone, late comers may receive an alternate meal
       
  • A cashier is available to make change (please avoid $20 dollar bills). The donation is placed anonymously in the collection box. Those over 60 years of age are served regardless of ability to pay
        
  • The meal is served at 12 noon; the dining room opens for seating at 11:45 am

Meals on Wheels

Frozen entrees are available for homebound seniors who are unable to prepare their own meals. This program is available through Senior Services of King County. Application is necessary. Meals are ordered for two weeks at a time and are delivered by volunteers every other week. Call our Program Coordinator at 425-556-2388 for an application and information packet.

Grocery Shopping Assistance

Transportation for grocery shopping is provided for City of Redmond older adults who have no other means of transportation. It is offered once a week, usually on Thursday.

Grocery Shopping Guidelines:

  • Each day is limited to eight people and three bags per person  
  • Large, heavy items cannot be accommodated – you must be able to lift and carry what you buy  
  • Must sign up at least one day in advance  
  • The round trip fare is $3  
  • Be ready for pick up by 9 am (this is an approximate time)  
  • Shopping time at Fred Meyer is 1½ hours
     

Please note: The shopping day may change if it conflicts with a special event that cannot be scheduled on another day. Every attempt will be made to notify users of changes in the shopping day at least one week prior to the change.

Wellness Partnerships

Health

Foot Care

We have three foot care providers for your convenience.  Each provider has been trained by the same podiatrist and each provider is a nurse.  Foot care is provided three Mondays a month.  Call the RSC at 425-556-2314 for more information. 

Each participant receives a foot assessment, trimming and debridement of toenails and calluses, and treatment for minor foot ailments. Instructions are also provided to help the participant have more comfortable, healthy feet. Referrals for further foot care will be given as needed.

A newly sterilized set of tools is used for each participant, and proper infection control methods will be followed. This service does not include soaking.
 
Prior registration and appointment required. The fee is $30 paid at the time of registration; date information is in Encore!.

Evergreen Care Network

The Evergreen Care Network, a service of Evergreen Hospital, helps area residents and their families when special needs arise as a result of aging, chronic illness, or disability. Service coordinators provide information on community social and health services such as housing, home health care, financial assistance and support groups. Health Lectures

Each quarter, the RSC hosts health-oriented lectures provided by both Overlake Hospital and EvergreenHealth*. Generally held on Wednesday mornings, these lectures cover a wide variety of health concerns. Information on the currently scheduled lectures is found in Encore!. While these lectures are free, prior registration is required. Low prior registration may result in cancellation of the presentation.

Due to popular demand, additional Wellness presentations from a variety of sources are now offered on Tuesdays after lunch.

Blood Pressure ChecksCourtesy Blood Pressure Checks

Retired healthcare professionals are here to help you take your blood pressure on most Thursday mornings.

Additional volunteers with experience in taking blood pressure are needed as substitutes to help cover when the regular volunteers need to miss a session. Please contact the Front Desk if you are interested.

Legal, Insurance and Financial Assistance 

Eastside Legal Assistance Program (ELAP)

Volunteer attorneys provide free confidential advice on legal matters. ELAP clinics are held in the Wellness Rooms and are available on the first and third Fridays of each month. Call ELAP at 425-747-7274 for eligibility and an appointment.

Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA)

A volunteer trained by the State Insurance Commissioner’s office is available to answer questions about supplemental health insurance, Medicare, and insurance billing. Appointments for this free service are available on selected Mondays. Call 425-556-2314 to schedule an appointment.

Senior Rights

The Senior Rights Assistance program’s trained volunteers provide free, unbiased, accurate information regarding legal and consumer rights. Their broad range of knowledge spans issues related to Consumer Protection, Consumer Debt and Bankruptcy, Homeowner, Landlord-Tenant, Kinship Care, Estate Planning, Guardianships, and Powers-of-Attorney. They have a dynamic group of highly trained volunteers who are committed to serving the community. Finding the answers to complex questions can be difficult, and SRA strives to inform and support clients while guiding them toward resolving their issues.

Financial Workshops

Selected financial groups provide workshops on a variety of financial issues. The workshops are generally held on Tuesday mornings. Check Encore! for the current schedule of workshops. While these workshops are free, prior registration is required. The workshops offered are designed to be useful and informative. The RSC does not endorse any product or program. It is each individual's responsibility to make informed decisions regarding these issues.

Transportation Assistance

ACCESS Transportation Program

The Metro ACCESS program is a transportation alternative that many of our participants utilize. Metro offers advance reservation, door-to-door, van services for people with limited incomes, age 65 and over; or for those who have a disability, regardless of income, who are unable to use regular bus service. Application packets can be picked up at the RSC or call Metro at 206-553-3060 for a packet.
