Housing

What is Happening in Housing?

Through the Comprehensive Plan, the community has expressed that it values encouraging the provision of a variety of housing choices for people of a variety of ages and incomes. The City has adopted policies in the Housing Element of its Comprehensive Plan that speak directly to those values, and has set in motion a number of initiatives consistent with them.

Housing Strategy Plan

The Housing Element in the Comprehensive Plan directs the City to establish a Housing Strategy Plan to consider actions that will implement the City’s housing goals and policies (Policy HO-8). The Housing Strategy Plan identifies a wide range of potential strategies and prioritizes them to address housing needs.

East King County Housing Needs Analysis

Under the provisions of the State Growth Management Act, the housing element contained within a city’s Comprehensive Plan is to “include an inventory and analysis of existing and projected housing needs that identifies the number of housing units necessary to manage projected growth.” As a member of ARCH (A Regional Coalition for Housing), the East King County Housing Needs Analysis provides Redmond with consistent data and analysis to help understand current needs in the City and region as well as informing the updates of Redmond’s Comprehensive Plans to identify projected housing needs. The Needs Analysis is organized into three sections:

1) East King County Report

This report highlights the key demographic and housing information for East King County. Much of the information in this section is provided at the sub-regional level with some mention where cities vary significantly from East King County averages.

2) Redmond Summary Report

A separate report is also provided for Redmond as a member of ARCH. This report highlights: where Redmond’s conditions vary significantly from the results reported in the East King County report; unique characteristics of the City that impact local housing conditions; and local efforts made in the past to address local housing needs.

3) Housing Needs Analysis Appendix

The appendix includes a wider range of demographic and housing related data, including more detailed tables for all the information provided in the sub-regional and city summary reports. Most data is provided at the city, sub-regional and countywide level.

Housing data for East King County and Redmond is also updated periodically in a report entitled Housing 101 for East King County, available through the ARCH website.
