What will NE 85 Street look like?
Currently, NE 85 Street is configured as a four lane road with bike lanes.  The conversion will provide one travel lane in each direction, a continuous two-way left turn lane, bike lanes on both sides of the streets, and areas that can be used for parallel parking, bus stop pull-outs, right turn lanes, or loading zones.  We are also considering adding a gateway feature at the bridge over the slough.

What will 164 Avenue NE look like?
Most of 164 Avenue NE (from Cleveland to NE 87 Street) is configured as a four lane road.  The conversion will provide one travel lane in each direction, a continuous two-way left turn lane, and bike lanes on both sides of the streets.  Buses will stop in-lane.

How much will it cost to convert these downtown roadways?
The current funding available to convert NE 85 Street and 164 Avenue NE is $650,000.  The Business Tax/Transportation Improvement Advisory Committee allocated $629,000 in business tax revenue to fund this important downtown project.  The remaining $21,000 is coming from the City's Capital Improvement Program.

The following are level of service (LOS) and corridor travel time comparisons for 2005 and 2022 for 4 lanes vs. three on NE 85 Street and 164 Avenue NE:

  • 2005.  4 lanes on NE 85 Street/4 lanes on 164 Avenue NE compared to 3 lanes on NE 85 Street/3 lanes on 164 Avenue NE.
  • 2022.  4 lanes on NE 85 Street/4 lanes on 164 Avenue NE compared to 3 lanes on NE 85 Street/3 lanes on 164 Avenue NE.

You can also see cross-section comparisons of existing 4 lane sections and proposed 3 lane sections for NE 85 Street and for 164 Avenue NE.
