Background

The Bear Creek Parkway Extension is the first project to come out of the City's Downtown Transportation Master Plan.  Originally included in Redmond's Comprehensive Plan in 1995, the project to extend Bear Creek Parkway was revisited during the public process to create the City's Downtown Transportation Master Plan in 2002.  The final location and layout of the Bear Creek Parkway Extension is a result of this public Transportation Master Plan process.  For more information about this, check the link below for the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

The Bear Creek Parkway Extension is a significant component of the vision for Downtown Redmond.  Features such as on-street parking, 14-foot wide sidewalks, street trees, pedestrian-scale lighting, and a pedestrian plaza will create an environment that not only supports but encourages pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit.

The Bear Creek Parkway Extension will provide an additional street connection through Downtown Redmond.  The project will also improve transit connections and allow for better access to the open space in the downtown area.  Redmond Way and Cleveland Street will better serve more uses, including transit, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic.  Stronger connections will also support the economic vitality of Redmond's Downtown.

As of November 2007, the project is in final design.  City staff are coordinating with adjacent property owners and developments to acquire right-of-way and the necessary easements.  Environmental clean-up on the City-owned property south of the railroad was conducted during summer 2007.  Stormwater treatment for the north end of this project was provided during the summer of 2007 by construction of the McRedmond Regional Stormwater Quality Facility.

Construction for the Bear Creek Parkway Extension will likely occur in phases.  City staff are working hard to minimize the impacts the construction could have on commuters and local businesses.  Click on the link to view the proposed schedule for the Bear Creek Parkway Extension project.
