Hester Prynne is one of the great central female characters in American literature--a woman with vital sexuality, force and ironic humor. In Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, we see what the subjugation of that identity costs both Hester and her community--and what that suppression means for all women who are forced to understand that they have no voice. Staged by Lear deBessonet, a visionary director of innovative new works for the theatre, Naomi Iizukas' exciting new American Cycle version of Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel unfolds in the shifting, surprising landscape of past and present co-mingled, bringing us together to explore this universal human story through an aesthetic that is vibrantly alive and American.

What is "Your Takes?"

  • Originally designed to surround our annual American Cycle production, this program has been expanding for the last six years. Its primary focus remains on the American Cycle, but for the last three years we've done "mini-series" for other plays in our season that demand public discussion, like Paradise Lost.
  • A free and public event that encourages candid discussion on pressing, contemporary issues.
  • A two-part program: first, community volunteers read aloud a 30-minute selection of the play; the reading is followed by a facilitated discussion, linking the themes, plot and history of the play to our lives and circumstances today. The discussion is specifically designed so that anyone may participate. It is not an academic debate on the merits of theatre or literature. It is rather a chance for community-building, welcoming all voices and perspectives.
  • Though everyone who attends may not read a role, all attendees are considered participants and are invited to share their ideas, opinions and experiences in the open discussion that follows.
  • The entire event runs no longer than 90 minutes.
